Chapter Sixteen

AS HAILEY DROVE home, the thought of being alone in the house after Mason left for work terrified her. Given Gage’s successful security breach, her 24-hour guard gate and house alarm had never seemed more inadequate. With the guards on high-alert, there should be virtually no chance of an unauthorized vehicle entering the community. If Gage succeeded in getting to her house again, she’d be completely vulnerable without Mason at home. She couldn’t allow that.

She had an idea and decided that she was ready to turn a new leaf with Mason. The Cancun trip had brought them closer together and it was time she demonstrated her trust in him.

When she went into the house, she found Mason on his hands and knees in the kitchen, scrubbing the floor with a brush.

“What happened?” Hailey asked.

“Damned coffee maker. I dropped it while I was cleaning it. I want to make sure these grounds don’t soak into the tile.” He resumed scrubbing.

“Can I help?” Hailey asked.

“No, I’ve got it.”

He seemed tenser than she would expect him to be after simply dropping a coffee maker. She went to the fridge and got out a bottle of water.

“Why was your car parked at the gate this morning?” Mason asked.

She had known something was bothering him and now it made sense.

“I went out for a run.”

“You always start your runs from the house.” Mason dipped the brush into the soapy water in the sink and scrubbed harder.

“Well, today I tried something different,” she said.

Mason stopped and looked up at her, clearly not satisfied with her vague answer.

Hailey added, “I’ve decided to tighten up my training and I want an exact mile count. Starting at the gate takes off nearly a quarter of a mile each way.” Hailey knew Mason probably wouldn’t buy that explanation.

Mason tossed the brush into the sink and stood to rinse a scour pad. “Okay,” he said. He snatched a towel from the oven handle and dried his hands.

“Mason, let’s go sit down,” Hailey said. “I want to talk to you about something important.”

Mason tossed the towel onto the countertop and said, “Did the guy contact you again?”

“No.” She took his hand and led him to the den. She sat first and gave his hand a gentle tug to sit beside her. She recognized Mason’s flat demeanor as one he always wore when he had talked himself into a jealous fit.

Hailey took a big breath and said, “I want to go out on a limb and ask you to help me with something that may come as a shock to you.”

“After Cancun, I don’t need any more shocks. Tell me what the hell is going on, Hailey,” Mason said, folding his hands.

“After a lot of thought, I think I’ve convinced myself that I want you to show me how to use a gun.”

Disbelief dissolved into a smile on Mason’s face. “What?” he said.

“I’m serious,” Hailey said.

Mason laughed. “Who are you and what did you do with my wife?”

Hailey joined him, laughing. Seeing Mason swell with excitement felt good to Hailey.
